After weeks of anticipation the Library Desk and Information Desk have finally moved to their new home within the Social Learning Zone. The new Library entrance is located at the top end of the SLZ with views out to the Students Union and Room 365 (formerly Eagle365). The entrance to the Library brings you into the Welcome Zone where you will find the Information Desk, Library Desk and our new self-service machines where you can issue / return items and check on items you have out on loan. We also have photocopying and self-service binding facilities available within this area.

Today is a very exciting day for the Library.

The walls are coming down from the main Library to the link corridor which leads to our new Self-Service area in the Social Learning Zone. This is the area where the issue desk was formerly and will now be a seating area and the walk way to the Self-Service area and Social Learning Zone.
In the new Self-Service area will be the Library Enquiry Desk, the Information Desk, the new Self-Service machines for issuing and returning books. There will also be photocopiers and printing facilities in this area.

The area officially opens on Wednesday, come and visit us then!

Beer Lines

New to the Library this year are Self Service machines where you can borrow and return books using your Student ID card.  The machines are operated by a simple to use touch screen and Library staff will be demonstrating how to use the machines on the Library Tours.  When in the Library if you require any help, please ask a member of staff.

 Also new to the Library this year is an improved Library Catalogue, where you can search for items to borrow. The system is very user friendly and has features such as displaying book covers alongside the records, enabling you to identify the book on the shelves more easily.

The ‘My Account’ option on the Library Catalogue offers a convenient way of managing your Library Account.  Using this option you can:

- check what you have out on loan and when the item/s is due back

- check up on your reservations and cancel any that you no longer need

- renew your loans

- check if there are any outstanding fines on your account

You can access the Library Catalogue via the Library homepage 24/7 or in the Library itself during opening hours. If you require any help using the Library Catalogue please ask a member of staff, pick up or download one of our User Guides which are located in the Library and on the Library Webpages.

We have just received the following announcement from Mark Allanson, Director of External Affairs at the University of Bolton regarding the grand opening of the Social Learning Zone and our new campus in Ras al Khaimah, UAE later this month.

“I am delighted to tell you that it will be a Royal opening. HRH The Earl of Wessex will formally open the new £2.5 million student development here and witness the simultaneous unveiling of a commemorative plaque, via satellite link, at the University’s new £1 million campus in Ras al Khaimah, UAE.

As part of his visit The Earl will see an exhibition to showcase the University and visit the new Students’ Union facilities.

The focal point of the opening event will be the new Social Learning Zone, in the former textile hall, adjacent to the Student Information Centre and Eagle Mall.
 
It will create a  bright, spacious environment giving students space to study in a traditional library setting or in a relaxed atmosphere with access to the latest wireless technology, enabling them to work in groups online and in networks. It offers seating for 200. It also includes:
 
a mezzanine floor Students’ Union with bar and social facilities.
a new all-day, every-day computer access room.
new Students’ Union offices and advice centre.

The development also includes a new library entrance which leads into the Social Learning Zone.

We are expecting 150 guests – partners, stakeholders and friends of the University.”

Yesterday at 5pm after 40 years of service to students and staff of the University, the Library on Chadwick campus closed its doors for the last time.  Here are some pictures to mark this momentous occasion!

An empty Library. Virtually all of the books have been transported up to Eagle to be re shelved there. You can see the last shelving unit in the entire Library in the background.

The Great Wall of Chadwick! Thanks to Phil and Mike two of our student helpers for this impressive construction. It is made out of all the VHS video stock and is over 7 meters long and two video boxes deep in places.

Our very last customer definitely thought the Library was a purrfect place to be! This local cat adopted the Library as its second home over the summer months.

All Library services will now be available from Eagle Library.

From this morning, the entrance to the Library will be from the bottom of Eagle Tower Staircase (T1). This will be the entrance until the building work is finished. Please note you need to use this door to exit the Library. You will notice that the Issue Desk facilities are now also at the Information Desk. Please ask a member of staff if you need any assistance or guidance.

We have received the following message from Sara Burgess, Head of Student Services.

Can all students please note that as part of the Eagle Buildings development work the 365 Room is now closed for the summer. Alternative computer facilities are available 9am-5pm in Eagle library, though access may be distrupted at times due to building work. However, the computer lab ‘Pine’ will also be open on T2, Eagle Tower during these hours. And computers within the Design Studio are also available to students 9am-5pm.

A new 365 Room will open in the autumn as part of the new Social Learning Zone.
